I started thinking about deal breakers last night during my daily three a.m. wake-up call. I have really bad sinuses and allergies (I’m literally allergic to every single one of the viles they use in allergy tests), so as soon as the heat comes on in October I hit the beginning of Stephanie’s Annual Runnynosepalooza. The first few weeks I wake up in a panic just trying to catch my breath.

After my brain rings the alarm to let me know that I’m about to asphyxiate I bolt up in bed and start honking my nose like a fiend. After I blow my brains out I gently lob my dirty tissues in the general direction of my trash can (remember, it is still three in the morning). By the time I wake up for work the next morning, I’m a snotty tired, congested mess with crackly ears. The ground is littered with stiff Puffs carcasses, and I shuffle off to the shower, hoping that the hot steam will drain some of the snot in my head so that my face wouldn’t explode during the day. I have a big, juicy family, and apparently one of our favorite pastimes is going to funerals. As I’ve mentioned before, the last year has been rough. I’m on a first name basis with our family funeral director[1], and Lord knows I’ve purchased my share of comfortable black shoes lately. This year has been hard, but one of the hardest parts has been when the people I love are afraid they’ll upset me by mentioning that things have been a little crazy lately. Take it from me: death is hard, but it’s a lot harder if you’re worried you’re gonna scare the bejesus outta your friends. Dead people make the living so nervous!

At this point, you may be asking youself: how can I be a Funeral All-Star? Well, I’m glad you asked! Read the rest of this article »

How do you maintain excitement with someone after the first meeting?

I met this brilliant girl the night before she was scheduled to embark on a week-long trip across a small portion of the country. How do I know she’s brilliant? Because she knew she had to do something to keep up the positive feelings we had for each other over the course of the week.
